NOTICE ABOUT INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS & CLASS ACTIVITIES

Effective November 1, 2023 the transition of class instructors from full-time employees to Independent Contractors (IC) has led to a noticeable decline in the number of classes offered at Dobson Ranch. Each instructor was allowed to become an Independent Contractor; accepting to do so and meet all legal and insurance requirements was a personal decision made exclusively by each instructor.

The decision on the part of the Association to make this change was simple. Each class, except for Dance Classes with Jana Moore (already an IC), was operating at a loss to the Association. Furthermore, many of the class attendees are non-residents. In other words, the Association paid out more than it brought in.

Reducing costs and liability are the primary reasons to hire Independent Contractors. This includes employee benefits, taxes, workers comp, and other associated expenses, such as low-class/no-class attendance, but the Association is still obligated to pay the employee. This financial benefit to the Association has been a motivating factor for making this transition.

It's important to note that while teaching recreation classes as an Independent Contractor offers many advantages, it also comes with responsibilities that instructors must be diligent in managing these aspects of their business to ensure success.

Classes will be advertised through RecDesk, the Dobson Ranch website, and the Ranchers' RoundUp. All class registrations are through RecDesk, following the IC Class Policy, but payments will be managed and received by the Independent Contractor only. The IC Class Policy is posted on the website under dobsonranchhoa.com/classes-and-sports.

So, where does this leave us? At an exciting crossroads! As we rebuild and reorganize Dobson Ranch for the future, we want to establish new programs, encourage new-class IC's who are very comfortable with this business model, and develop new activities.
