Start planning for a garden!
Dobson Ranch has a community garden. The garden is at the Dobson Pines tennis court (located west of Dobson Road, near the Don Carlos and Saratoga intersection on Kiowa Street). The garden consists of raised beds, 3 feet x 5 feet. Residents select their plots and may plant either vegetables or flowers. The cost for the plot is $50 per season (September through February and March through August). There is water at the site and the court is kept locked with gardeners provided with keys. Soil is provided for each plot, and gardeners are responsible for “filling” their plots with the provided soil and purchasing seeds or plants.
The community garden is the result of months of planning and research by the Ranch’s Beautification Committee. The garden is considered a pilot project, which received the approval of the board of directors at its June 17, 2010 meeting. Based on input from other community gardens, the Ranch has a set of guidelines for participants and an agreement contract.
So, if you like to garden and want to grow some vegetables or flowers, come into the administrative office at La Casita NOW, pay your $50 plot fee and select your plot for the Ranch community garden. Plots need to be selected in time for September or March planting. Maybe you would like to make it a family project. Maybe you have always wanted to garden but didn’t have the right conditions in your yard. The community garden offers numerous possibilities. It is a new way to share in a community event, meet fellow gardeners and save on your grocery bill by growing some of your own food. Let’s see who can grow the biggest tomato or zucchini or . . . .
